Marvel Comics Looks Ahead to 2027 With a Lot of Monsters

Marvel's comics panels at New York Comic Con covered a lot of ground. There were new launches, a big anniversary issue, plenty of horror and a few good jokes. Here's the full rundown heading into 2027.

Bullpen Bulletins: new launches and milestones

Editor-in-Chief Stephen Wacker headlined the panel and kicked off what Marvel is calling a new era. The biggest news:

  • Captain Marvel gets a new ongoing series from G. Willow Wilson and Rachael Stott, launching May 2027 after the events of Avengers: Armageddon.
  • Daredevil #700 arrives in March 2027, a major milestone for the Man Without Fear. A dangerous new villain also debuts in the book.
  • X-Men: Regulators is a five-issue miniseries spinning out of Gail Simone's Uncanny X-Men.
  • Wolverine joins the Fantastic Four for a zombie-filled adventure.
  • Fresh details on Sarah Gaunt's war against the X-Men, plus new Momo-Tone variant covers arriving in November.

Magneto: End of Days from Bendis and Sorrentino

At Saturday's House of Ideas panel, Marvel announced an eight-issue prestige series from writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Andrea Sorrentino, with colors by Dave Stewart. It launches in February 2027 and bounces between key moments in Magneto's past and a surprising near future. Marvel promises guest stars galore. The first issue has variant covers by Alex Maleev, Jerome Opeña and Netho Diaz.

Hulk War: Infernal Rage

Phillip Kennedy Johnson's horror-driven Hulk saga heads toward a finale with a five-issue event series, art by Nic Klein, arriving February 2027. The Infernal Hulk declares the Marvel Universe his kingdom while the remaining heroes search for a weapon that could stop him. Johnson said he prefers his Hulk stories frightening, and he admitted he was surprised Marvel let one particularly brutal Wolverine fight through. The panel also teased the return of Gray Hulk and a first look at the Infernal Avengers.

Immortal Soldiers and the aftermath of Armageddon

Immortal Soldiers #1 is a January 2027 one-shot from Chip Zdarsky and Christian Rosado. It follows Avengers: Armageddon, but the ending doesn't mean the fighting is over. The public has lost faith in superheroes, and the story asks who steps up when the world no longer trusts its protectors.

A Star Wars crossover that almost didn't happen

Star Wars | Marvel: Hope Assembles has expanded to six issues, with a 30-page opener and 20 pages for each issue after that. The panel said Lucasfilm had turned the idea down before, and the upcoming 50th anniversary of Star Wars helped make it happen. It's set in continuity, and teased moments include Spider-Man searching for a missing Luke Skywalker and Magneto trying to hold back the Death Star. The creative team even asked the big question: can a lightsaber cut adamantium? Dave Marquez provides interior art, with variant covers by Alex Ross, Kaare Andrews and Dan Jurgens.

Smaller wins and a few laughs

  • X-Orcists was upgraded from miniseries to ongoing after Iman Vellani asked why it wasn't one already. Issue #3 in January adds Elsa Bloodstone to the demon-hunting team.
  • What The–?! returns in January as a humor one-shot. The credits list "Not Chip Zdarsky," a running gag from the panel.
  • A New York Knicks "Captain Clutch" variant cover for Amazing Spider-Man #1001 made an appearance.
  • Spider-Man fans also heard about the "Crisis of Faith" crossover and a new Spider-Punk.

The Midnight Universe gets darker

At The Midnight Hour panel, Marvel showed new art and character designs for Midnight X-Men, Midnight Fantastic Four and Midnight Spider-Man, plus the debut of Midnight Doctor Octopus. January's fourth issues tease a mysterious cosmic artifact affecting the Fantastic Four, a growing conspiracy in Midnight X-Men, and the birth of a second synthetic mutant in Midnight Spider-Man.
